Rug Under the Sofa, On Top or In Front? The Definitive Guide

It's probably the most frequent question we're asked: "Should the rug go under the sofa or in front of it?" The answer depends on the size of the rug, the layout of the living room and the effect you want to achieve. There isn't a single rule — there are three main configurations, each with its own pros and its own logic. This guide explains them all, with precise measurements.

The three possible configurations

For a standard living room with a sofa + coffee table (possibly with armchairs), there are three ways to position the rug:

  • Configuration 1 — Everything on: the rug is large enough to hold all the legs of the sofa, armchairs and coffee table entirely. The rug "floats" in the centre and the whole seating group rests on it. Minimum size required: 230×300 cm, 240×340 cm or more recommended for large living rooms.
  • Configuration 2 — Front legs only: the rug is wide enough to include the front legs of the sofa (and armchairs, if present) but not the back legs. The sofa is "anchored" to the rug but overhangs at the back. Size required: at least 160×230 cm for a 3-seater sofa.
  • Configuration 3 — In front only: the rug is entirely in front of the sofa, without the sofa touching it. The rug occupies the coffee-table space and the walkway. It only works with decorative rugs, not structuring ones (e.g. kilim, small rugs). Size required: 120×180 cm or 140×200 cm.

Which configuration is right for my living room?

Configuration Visual effect Size needed Suited to
Everything on Unifying, elegant, "room within a room" From 230×300 cm up Large living rooms, contemporary look
Front legs only Dynamic, connected, very common From 160×230 cm up Medium living rooms, the most versatile solution
In front only Decorative, separate, punctual 120×180 cm or 140×200 cm Small spaces, rug as an accent

The most important tip: the most common mistake is choosing a rug that's too small. A rug that floats in isolation in the middle of the living room, far from all the furniture, creates a disorienting effect. Better a rug that's slightly too big than one that's too small.

Specific sizes by sofa type

  • 2-seater sofa (160–180 cm wide): "front legs only" configuration with a 160×230 cm rug. For an "everything on" configuration, at least 200×280 cm.
  • 3-seater sofa (200–220 cm wide): "front legs only" configuration with a 200×280 cm rug. For an "everything on" configuration, 240×340 cm.
  • L-shaped sofa: the rug must contain the entire long side of the sofa. Most-used configuration: "everything on" with a 240×340 cm or 270×370 cm rug. The rug should form a visual corner with the sofa.
  • Open plan (living room + kitchen): the rug also serves to define the living area and visually separate it from the kitchen. Use a large size (230×300 cm or more) with the "everything on" configuration to create a clearly delimited zone.

How to check the right size before buying

A practical trick: use painter's tape (or sheets of newspaper) to mark out the rug's perimeter on the floor before buying. This lets you check:

  • Whether the "front legs only" configuration works with the dimensions you've chosen
  • How much space is left between the edge of the rug and the walls (rule: minimum 30–40 cm from each wall)
  • Whether the coffee table is included on the rug or not

Which type of rug works best under/in front of the sofa?

  • Wool: the best choice for durability and comfort. The sofa rests its legs on it for years — wool holds up without crushing. See the modern wool rugs.
  • Berber: hard-wearing, hypoallergenic, easy to clean. One of the most practical choices for a living room with daily traffic. See the Berber rugs.
  • Contemporary design: for those who want the rug as a leading decor element, the designer rugs selection offers architectural patterns in various materials.
  • Kilim: for an "in front only" configuration or for those who want vivid colours and patterns. The flat kilim adapts well to being placed in front of the sofa without creating level differences. See the selection of kilim.
