Ziegler Carpets: History, Manufacturing, and How to Match Them with Contemporary Decor

The Ziegler carpet is one of the most beloved textiles by contemporary interior designers: pastel palette, scaled floral designs, and a dense hand-knotted weave. But where do they come from and why do they work so well in modern living rooms? This guide answers all.

What is a Ziegler carpet and where does it come from?

The Ziegler is an oriental carpet named after the Swiss-German trading company Ziegler & Co., which was active in Persia starting in the second half of the nineteenth century. The company commissioned the manufacturers of Sultanabad (now Arak, Iran) to reinterpret classic Persian patterns on a larger scale and with muted colors, to satisfy the European taste of the Victorian era.

The result was a highly successful hybrid: the quality of Persian weaving with a lighter, less saturated aesthetic, which today perfectly suits minimalist and Nordic interior design.

How to recognize an authentic Ziegler carpet?

Three characteristics distinguish an original Ziegler from an industrial imitation:

  • Hand-knotting: Persian (Senneh) or Turkish (Ghiordes) knots, with a density of 80,000–160,000 knots per square meter
  • Pastel palette: beige, ivory, muted rust, powder blue, sage green — colors derived from dyeing with natural dyes and the effect of time
  • Scaled floral pattern: arabesques, palmettes (boteh), tendrils that repeat on open fields, without the compactness of Tabriz or Kashan carpets

Where and how are Ziegler carpets produced today?

Historical production was concentrated in Sultanabad. Today, manufacturing has predominantly shifted to Afghanistan and Pakistan, where local artisans reproduce the original cartoons on vertical looms, using hand-spun sheep's wool and natural or chrome-vegetable dyes.

Afghan carpets in Ziegler style — often also called Chobi or Oushak-style — are among the highest quality artisan productions available on the market today, with production times ranging from 6 months to 2 years for large formats.

How to pair a Ziegler carpet with contemporary decor?

The strength of the Ziegler lies in its chromatic versatility. Here are the combinations that work best:

  • Minimalist Nordic living room: light grey or off-white sofa + beige-rust Ziegler. The pattern adds warmth without overwhelming.
  • Modern-classic bedroom: natural linen headboard + ivory-sage green Ziegler. Harmonious and restful palette.
  • Study with floor-to-ceiling bookshelves: large format Ziegler (240×170 or 300×200) anchors the space and balances the verticality of the bookshelves.
  • Open space with open-plan kitchen: the Ziegler defines the living area by setting boundaries without creating visual barriers.

What sizes should you choose for a Ziegler?

As with all oriental carpets, the golden rule is that at least the front legs of the sofa must rest on the carpet. For a living room with a three-seater sofa, the minimum recommended size is 200×140 cm; for larger rooms, sizes range from 240×170 or 300×200 cm.

The Ziegler also works well in runner formats (80×300 cm) in corridors and entrances, where the elongated pattern creates an interesting scenic effect.

How to clean and maintain a Ziegler carpet?

Being hand-knotted wool, Ziegler carpets are naturally resistant to dirt and stains. Basic instructions:

  • Vacuum regularly from the pile side, avoiding the fringe
  • For stains: blot immediately with cold water and neutral detergent, without rubbing
  • Professional cleaning every 3–5 years using the cold water method
  • Avoid prolonged direct sun exposure, which can alter vegetable dyes

How much does an artisan Ziegler carpet cost?

The price varies enormously based on knot density, size, and origin. A good quality Afghan Ziegler (size 160×240 cm) typically costs between €500 and €1,200. Pieces of fine craftsmanship, with a density exceeding 120,000 knots/sqm, can exceed €2,000 for large formats.
